LO1: Explain the purpose of a personal media profile

Part one: What is a personal media profile?

A personal profile is a log of a person’s work meant to be shown to someone as a brief introduction to them, how they act in and out of work demonstrating their professional in work attitude as well as what they enjoy doing when they are not working. As well as the work that they are capable of creating. Personal profiles are very important as that they can be used to help improve the chances of you getting a job in your field because having a large amount of gathered work gives a potential employer a lot for them to look at and see what you are capable of.

A personal profile would also contain certain official documents such as a CV and any certificates you have attained for work related to the chosen field. A personal profile would be showcased to prospective employers, higher education providers as well as in interviews for free-lance contracts.

Part two: Examples of journalistic personal media profiles:

A personal media profile can be presented either physically or as a website. I have included some examples below:

1: Daniel Sato

On his personal website Daniel Sato has stored all of the journalistic work he has done in a section titled “portfolio.” The website is well designed appearing professional. This is important as that Sato is a photographer as well as a journalist meaning that showing off his photography work is very important for him.

As well as what I have previously mentioned Sato also has sections of his website devoted to showcasing his practical skills such as the sections that state “Adding Graphics to non – visual stories” as well as “Using Time Machine to Back Up an External Drive.” This would appeal to an employer as that it shows that he is skilled in what he does.

 2: Lam Thuy Vo

The personal website of Lam Thuy Vo, a multi-media reporter who has worked for the Wall Street Journal and Buzzfeed, has a very simplistic appearance featuring four images of her work as well as her personal hobbies. The writing here also contains several links to the work that she has produced in her free time which shows her creative ideas such as showing somebodies anxiety about moving to a new city thought the music which they listened to (http://quantifiedselfie.us/nyc365/).
The profile also links to her Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram and email so that people can explore her work further or get in contact with her easily using her professional work accounts.

3: Kristina Rhodes

Rhodes is a Major of Journalism with a focus of public relations who has made a YouTube video showcasing her portfolio which I found to be interesting. As can be seen in the image below most of the pages in her portfolio consist of an example of her work as well as some writing how she feels about it in retrospect. This is the typical way of laying out a physical portfolio as that it allows the viewer to understand exactly how the work they viewing are is important to the role that the applicant is attempting to obtain.

4: Viki Emily Evans

This is the final example of a portfolio I have found and I think it is the better of the two as that It contains far more such as a self-made magazine and a notebook which shows her shorthand writing method as to explain it if necessary.
I have shown examples of this portfolio below:

Part three: The purpose of the portfolios featured above:

Portfolios serve several purposes the exact purpose of them varies on whether they are online or physical. Firstly, they can be required at interviews for jobs in the required field. In this case it is important that you as a candidate have an interesting and professional portfolio as that it must be the most impressive of all of the people who have applied for the job. Another reason to have a physical portfolio is that it allows you to keep a record for all of the pieces which you have written and for whom.

An online portfolio is also very important as that in the modern age journalism is increasingly reliant on video and other technological means (such as animated data visualisation as demonstrated in the portfolio of Lam Thuy Vo.) Which cannot be shown via a physical document. As well as this an online portfolio can be accessed by anyone at any time which means that if you are looking for free-lance work then potential employers are far more likely to see your past work and select you for the job.

Part four: Why would a Personal profile need to be repurposed?

Explain why a personal portfolio may need to be REPURPOSED (changed/ adapted) for a particular pathway (e.g. university course portfolio compared to a job interview portfolio, change from physical to digital):
a.       purpose (e.g. aim, justification)  - give an example
b.       change of platform (e.g. physical to digital) - give an example
c.       digitise (e.g. conversion, compression, multiple file types) – i.e made more compact, accessible to all om a range of devices ( employers, university)
d.       considerations (e.g. change of purpose)

There are several reasons that you may need to change your personal profile as to serve a specific purpose. An example of this would be how the profile would be different in applying for a university course in contrast to a job interview.
When creating a portfolio for a university course it is likely that you would be interested purely in the work that you have already done in the field that you are applying for as that they want to be sure that you have the right skills to perform well in the course.  As opposed to this it would be important to put work from all points in your life as well as information about yourself as a person in a portfolio for a job as that an employer wants to be sure that you are somebody who will fit into the working environment as well as someone who is capable of creating the type of content which they create.

It would also likely be important to change the platform of your portfolio as that whatever you are applying for (weather that be free-lance work, a job or a university course) may want to see both a digital and physical portfolio. As that most journalism Is done online digitisation is the norm however this comes with its own set of issues that must be addressed when creating a professional portfolio. The first of these would be the fact that large media products such as photoshop of Premiere files may be too large and need to be compressed. This could potentially be an issue as that compression makes media products look worse and therefore less professional. As well as this uploading physical work to a digital format may be time-consuming as that articles and other paper documents would need to be scanned in individually.

Another reason to repurpose a personal media profile would be to digitise (change it from a physical format to a digital one) it for the purpose of convenience. This is because having work that is available online is far more useful to a potential employer as well as being more cost effective as that expenses such as pricing or buying a hard drive/ usb stick do not have to be considered. As can also be seen above digital online portfolios have the potential to every aesthetically pleasing  and can support a range of different file formats such as PDF, TIFF, JPEG and animated GIFs.
