LO2: Planning the creation of a personal media profile

Below I have inserted the pieces of work that I would want to include in my personal media profile as well as the ways that I would provide them in both a digital as well as a physical method.

Type
Digital
Physical
Unit 3 – Create a media product:
Front page, contents page and inside pages of my magazine “Forge”

These pages were created near the end of year 12 using adobe in-design which was a piece of software I was not yet proficient with. It is for this reason that I feel that including this work shows how I am capable of using new technology. As well as this I feel that my work (especially in the double page spread I created) demonstrates how I am capable of structuring an article in a way that is clear, coherent and easy to read.  As well as this I feel that including this piece is of important as that I have displayed both my skills in graphic design and catering towards different target audiences due to the differences between the target demographics of this magazine and my journalism audience.

For this piece of work my job role was the journalist, graphic designer as well as a proof reader, photographer and editor.
In order to create this piece of work I used a desktop publishing programme “adobe InDesign” (.ind file type), Adobe Photoshop (psd file type) and Adobe Lightroom (LRCAT file type) which are both lossless file types which means that they are high quality and suitable for creating media products on, they are large file types which do not compress the large sizes of the JPEG and RAW photo sizes as well as allowing the user to edit the document in layers.
A lossless file cannot be efficiently uploaded online as that they are not accessible to everyone and they would take up a lot of storage and time to upload.
For these reasons I will upload my magazine as a PDF file as that it is read only and is a vector file which can be compressed and made smaller if needed. As well as this I could keep them as a TIF file type which is lossless and is therefore used in industry for printing (TIF files are also very accessible and would therefore be efficient)
In comparison to printing my magazine work It would be free to upload the magazine to the Internet.
If I was to print the magazine which I had created there are several issues which I would encounter. Firstly, I would have to avoid the product looking low definition such as if it were to be pixelated. As well as this it would need to be on glossy paper as to adhere to the codes and conventions of magazine production in the professional industry.
In order to make sure that the piece was in high definition I would print it as TIF file as to make it High definition. This would make it cost slightly more than simply printing a jpeg file. As well as this the glossy paper would make it more expensive to print.
I would have to print on size A4 size paper in order to make it fit in a normal portfolio.
According to the price calculator on www.Maxim.com printing two sides of A4 glossy paper would cost approximately £6. In addition to this the A3 side which would be my double page spread would cost another £6. This coupled with the fact that I would have to invest approximately £25 on a professional portfolio folder to put them in. This would make the total price of printing to £37
Unit 7 – Journalism:
My article about WW2 commemorations

It is clear that when aiming for a place on a course studying journalism that I would include my work from the purely journalism focused section of this course. For this part of the course my final piece was an article about how Sheffield city council (also of the time of writing the article) had not yet announced any special commemoration for the 100thanniversary of the ending of WW1. The piece demonstrates my skill as a writer as well as my willingness to conduct research which was shown through me trying to contact the city council as well creating a survey to find out how people in the city felt

For this piece I performed the job roles of a journalist, researcher, editor and proofreader.
As with any piece of written document created using Microsoft word the easiest way to repurpose the file would be to safe it as a PNG file and then upload that to the Internet.
The reason for this is because a PNG is the best (highest quality) read- only file type.
Again, the solution for this issue would be quite simple. It would be quick, cheap and easy to print out a word document onto a normal A4 size piece of paper. I could then store these in the folder I have mentioned investing in already.
Unit 7 -journalism:
 analysis of different news stories:

As well as my final piece for the journalism unit I feel like my work on this analysis would be impressive to someone going through candidates for a journalism course. This is because I have shown my understanding for different journalistic conventions such as mode of address as well as my understanding of political biases in the media.
For this piece of work I performed the job of a researcher.
As with the last piece of typed work I would likely export this work as a PDF file and then upload it to a website as such.
I would print the work out onto A4 paper and then put into the folder which I would buy.
Unit 15 – Audio visual promos:
“The White Room” Trailer.

I feel like the inclusion of this piece of collaborative work will show my versatility in working with different media programmes (the Adobe creative suite for example.) As well as this it is an audio-visual piece of work which will contrast from the rest of my work which is predominantly made up of pieces of written media pieces.
For this piece of work I performed the role of director.
In order to upload the video to my website in such a way that it would be of a high quality as well as not being difficult to put up I would export it from premiere as an mp4 and then either upload it straight to the website or put it on YouTube and put a link to it on the website.
The only way to hand in a video file physically would be by putting an MP4 of the project onto either a disk (DVD), hard drive, SD card or USB drive and then giving that to the person interviewing me. This would be far more costly that simply uploading it to the Internet and in addition to this it would be much more to prone to damage or loss.

My website will aim to make my efforts into university on a journalism course easier. This means
that it will have to include work that is relevant to someone who is looking for candidates for a
journalism course however I do not plan on only featuring journalism work as can be seen in the chart
above. This is because I feel that including pieces of work which are different from journalism makes me
stand out more as a person than someone who arrives at an interview with only journalism. This is
because it shows my ability to adapt to new environments, improvise and overcome challenges that
arise when doing something for the first time for example the film trailer which I have created.

I have chosen due to the challenges presented above I have decided that I will create a digital media
profile. I feel that this is a good idea as that I will not have to pay for different assets such as paper of
USB drives. I will also not have to wry about losing the portfolio as that it will be avalable online
meaning the it cannot physically be lost. Finally I feel that Digital portfolio is better for me as that I want
universities to be able to see positive examples of work that I have produced if they google byname.

Below I have included a visualisation diagram for how I plan the home screen of my website to look
when completed:
